Read full description of the books:
I talk at school assemblies about my fifth grade teacher, who had a shelf of books in our classroom that were either wildly unappealing (being about babysitters or dying horses), or wildly inappropriate (adult medical thrillers or romance novels). But she had THE HERO AND THE CROWN, which is how I discovered Robin McKinley, good books, and wanted to become a writer.
The one other gem that I found on that shelf was this.
This strange little book, which almost no one has ever heard of, is a collection of hilarious true stories about Hildegarde Dolson (a writer of murder mysteries and short stories for the New Yorker) growing up in a small town. Her entire family is weird, and Hildegarde is perhaps the weirdest of all, or maybe that's just the way she tells it. And it's really all in the way she tells it. Her descriptions of everything from her first dance to her youngest brother's fondness for catching earthworms is pants-wettingly funny. For instance, her younger sister Sally's best friend at age five used to bite Sally. No one else, just Sally. This upset both sets of parents, but didn't seem to bother Sally, who no doubt thought it was "the literal expression of the you look good enough to eat line. Even as a child, Sally was quite a dish, with cerulean eyes and hair the color of goldfish." Why is this so funny? I don't know, there's just a dry wit to her writing that I find irresistible!
I've wanted my own copy of this for years, and finally scored one. The book pictured isn't my edition, though, and I'm still thinking I'd better keep looking. The one I ended up with (ordered through Powells') says it's abridged. I didn't notice anything missing until the end. When she leaves college and moves to New York with her cousin Betty, a dancer, Betty's first real job is as a chorus girl in a burlesque house. That whole bit, with them finding out what "burlesque" means, is hysterical, but it's not included in this edition, which has illustrations and is clearly meant to be suitable for younger readers. Ah well! The search continues!
