Read full description of the books:

I am a bit of a fan of Geoffrey Moorhouse, so I found this book a little disappointing. I really enjoyed his The Fearful Void, which told of his travels through northern Africa, and I enjoyed his Apples in the Snow, about Uzbekistan. I had hoped to enjoy equally this book which covers southern India.
Somehow it just didn't capture me. It had some interesting side stories of people he met in various places, but overall it was sort of dry reading. Normally I can fight my way through that, and enjoy the good parts, but they were just too few and far between.
I have a couple more of his books in my shelf, and I will tackle them in due course!

His book To The Frontier won the Thomas Cook Award for the best travel book of its year in 1984. He had recently concentrated on Tudor history, with The Pilgrimage of Grace and Great Harry's Navy.
